Many people are accustomed to cooking on heat sources other than the kitchen stove. Backyard grills, camp stoves, or even a fireplace or bonfire. None of these are useful for everyday food preparation for an extended period, however. Weather, lack of fuel, safety concerns--all make it desirable to have some other way to cook the family's food.

Roughly speaking, there are only two ways to heat food if electricity is not available, with some source of flame, or with the sun (if you live where hot springs are available, you'll have three ways).
