Monday, February 13, 2006 Oh, poor me, another persecuted Christian George Deutsch, former Bush appointee as NASA spokesman, was a journalism major at Texas A&M. It's not clear how that qualifies a 24-year-old to edit scientists' reports or decide whether they can speak to the press. George took a lot of heat when James Hansen, one of NASA's top climate scientists and a highly respected researcher in the field of global warming, complained that reporters who wanted to speak to him had to go through Deutsch.Now Deutsch has fired back. In an email sent to journalists (as reported in this Washington Post article), the former NASA spokesman claimed:Anyone perceived to be a Republican, a Bush supporter or a Christian is singled out and labeled a threat to their views.I've got news for you, George. The reason you're a former NASA spokesman has nothing to do with your political or religious beliefs and everything to do with the fact that you LIED on your resume, saying you graduated from Texas A&M when you did not. Why aren't you apologizing to your bosses, your political party and your God instead of whining about someone else? Because you have no shame, that's why. Like the man who appointed you, you have no honor.But what an interesting parallel you draw. Are you implying that because you don't agree with Hansen's scientific findings, he must be neither a Republican, a Bush supporter or a Christian? Or are you saying that if Hansen was a Republican, a Bush supporter and a Christian his scientific findings would be different?Either one demeans Republicans, Bush supporters, Christians and scientific endeavor. I'm not sure why Americans decided that televised drama was better than the real thing, that cardboard microwave food containers were an adequate substitute for real dishes, and their contents for real food, or that cooking, dishwashing and face-to-face conversation wasn't worth the effort and time it required. Someone fed this nation a plastic crate of out-of-season tomatoes and told us it was life and we took them at their word, and we're so much the poorer for it that it's hard to know where to start to list the shortcomings." I wrote this a couple of years ago, but I have to admit it's much less amusing than I thought it would be to see the artifical construct falling apart. WHY 'LIFE AS A SPECTATOR SPORT'
