Monday, November 21, 2005 I'm not the only one . . . who thinks Mr. Bush might need to be watching over his shoulder.Back on October 31, 2005 I observed that Bush might not be "much of an asset these days" to the Republican Party. Since then, his poll numbers have continued to drop, his smarmy attack against Rep. John Murtha has received a lot of negative press and his inability to find the way off stage after a speech in China made the front page of newspapers all over the world (with many of them quoting Americablog's "No Exit Strategy" caption). But my comment was made in the middle of the night after a long exhausting day on the road, and once I'd had some sleep I didn't give it much more thought.So it was a bit of a surprise to find that I'm not the only one whose mind was wandering down that particular path. Keepiru, a diarist on Daily Kos, has a slightly different, but equally possible, take on the idea:The context is the abysmal and continually falling poll ratings for our illustrious commander in chief, the perceived disaster in Iraq (more on that below), and the inability of the current repugs to escape or to change the downward slide.Clearly, the one surefire way to pull George up out of the muck is to make him a hero. How do we make heros in politics? Think Reagan, Lincoln, Kennedy(s). They get shot. Now, I want to very clear here - I do not, and never would, even entertain the fantasy of assassinating Shrub. But, if you need a hero, think Manchurian Candidate. Judging from the comments to his post, there are a lot of other people who have had similar notions.Oh well. I thought I had come up with something original. I'm not sure why Americans decided that televised drama was better than the real thing, that cardboard microwave food containers were an adequate substitute for real dishes, and their contents for real food, or that cooking, dishwashing and face-to-face conversation wasn't worth the effort and time it required. Someone fed this nation a plastic crate of out-of-season tomatoes and told us it was life and we took them at their word, and we're so much the poorer for it that it's hard to know where to start to list the shortcomings." I wrote this a couple of years ago, but I have to admit it's much less amusing than I thought it would be to see the artifical construct falling apart.
