I'm compelled to quote John at AmericaBlog once again:Congress gave the president the authorization to go to war. They did not give him the authorization to do so incompetently. There's a big difference. You give your doctor permission to conduct a tonsilectomy. You do not, however, give him permission to get drunk and cut off your leg by mistake.Bush is guilty of military malpractice. No one gave him permission to do a sloppy job.Bush reminds me of the church choir I directed once. They wanted to run through the hymns they were going to sing the next Sunday once or twice, and go home. No practicing individual parts, no going over the music until they got it right, no real work. When I persisted with my old-fashioned notion of singing the right notes at the right time, they whined, "But we're not professionals!" In other words, since they couldn't be expected to do it perfectly, they shouldn't be expected to even try their best to improve. That was too hard; it wasn't any fun.Bush gives one the same impression. He's had it easy all his life. Grew up in a wealthy family, got out of serving in Vietnam, drifted through young adulthood in an alcoholic haze, trying and failing in one business after another--all subsidized by his family--and eventually wound up in politics. Now he's at the level where politics is no longer fun, or easy, and he doesn't want to do any real hard work. But he can't claim, "I'm not a professional," so he blames everyone else when things don't go his way.How did this man get to be the President of what was the most powerful nation on the face of the earth? If everyone took a good look at George W. Bush, and asked themselves that question in all seriousness, I think there would be a lot of shocked reactions of "Wait a minute! Just how did he get to be President?"And then, just maybe, the American public might actually demand to know what happened in 2000 and 2004. I'm not sure why Americans decided that televised drama was better than the real thing, that cardboard microwave food containers were an adequate substitute for real dishes, and their contents for real food, or that cooking, dishwashing and face-to-face conversation wasn't worth the effort and time it required. Someone fed this nation a plastic crate of out-of-season tomatoes and told us it was life and we took them at their word, and we're so much the poorer for it that it's hard to know where to start to list the shortcomings." I wrote this a couple of years ago, but I have to admit it's much less amusing than I thought it would be to see the artifical construct falling apart.
