Friday, September 23, 2005 Where our tax money goes From the Chicago Tribune, via Atrios, this is how private industry saves our tax dollars.The president of the American Bus Association, one of the nation's two largest bus industry trade groups, tried to provide buses to FEMA to move stranded residents out of the city. FEMA never got back to him.The president of United Motorcoach Association, the other large national trade group, called FEMA's Washington office to "let them know our members could help out." Sometime the next day, they referred him to an internet site titled "Doing Business With FEMA."Meanwhile, Landstar Express America, which had a $100 million contract with FEMA for emergency transportation services, was looking on the internet for someone to provide buses. They located Carey Limousine, whose internet site says it can handle large numbers of people. A spokesperson for Carey says Landstar contacted them on August 26 and on the 27th about bus availability, but didn't place an order until August 30, 18 hours after the storm. Carey divided up the job with Transportation Management Services, a Virginia company that arranges buses for conventions and other large events.By the weekend, and with the help of members from both trade groups, more than 1,000 buses were on the way to New Orleans.One might assume that Landstar dropped the ball on emergency transportation and that its contract with FEMA might be in jeopardy for non-performance.One might assume that only if one didn't know how the Bush administration works. Landstar was rewarded with another $125 million in government contracts for Katrina-related work, and according to a required regulatory filing, the maximum value of its contracts has been increased to $400 million.I'm over being shocked, disgusted, disillusioned and bitter. I just feel more and more numb every time I read something like this. I'm not sure why Americans decided that televised drama was better than the real thing, that cardboard microwave food containers were an adequate substitute for real dishes, and their contents for real food, or that cooking, dishwashing and face-to-face conversation wasn't worth the effort and time it required. Someone fed this nation a plastic crate of out-of-season tomatoes and told us it was life and we took them at their word, and we're so much the poorer for it that it's hard to know where to start to list the shortcomings." I wrote this a couple of years ago, but I have to admit it's much less amusing than I thought it would be to see the artifical construct falling apart. WHY 'LIFE AS A SPECTATOR SPORT'
