Wednesday, May 12, 2004 Why you shouldn't vote for Bush It's an interesting day when liberals and Christian fundamentalists agree on anything, but here on the Roy Moore for President website, are many of the same complaints that liberals and progressives make. The most pointed was:George W. Bush seems to have a problem being honest. Bush has been caught in many lies. He's lied about September 11. He's lied about Iraq. He's lied about his budget. The sad fact is that George W. Bush has lost all the moral authority that a President of the United States must have. Bush is a poor example for our children, who we try to teach to be honest.Unfortunately, their solution to the Bush problem is Judge Roy Moore, who certainly wouldn't hire any homosexuals in the federal government, who wouldn't allow "experimentation on human embryos," and who wouldn't allow American soldiers to serve under United Nations authority (items 11, 14 and 15 in his tirade against Bush). And I guess we could probably write off item 13 (the National Endowment of the Arts) altogether—if you didn't know already, the NEA funds blasphemy. Sigh. But darn, it's nice to hear a conservative saying things like this:We conservatives used to get angry at the Clinton Administration because of its dishonesty. We promised America that if George W. Bush became President, the lies would stop. Unfortunately, it appears that we were wrong. The Bush Administration has descended into the same kind of nonsense legalistic deceptions that we once accused Bill Clinton of committing. Most famously, George W. Bush insisted that he knew for sure that there were huge arsenals of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, weapons that could be used in an attack within America's borders. When it became clear that no such weapons existed, George W. Bush switched to justifying his war by saying that Iraq had "weapons-of-mass-destruction-related-program-activities". Talk about legalisms! An activity related to a program related to a weapon of mass destruction could be nothing more than just reading a book about the use of chemical weapons in World War I. Lately, the American people were told that Bush's National Security Advisor Condoleeza Rice was refusing to testify in public, under oath, because the principle of maintaining executive privilege is more important than understanding the events that led up to the attacks of September 11, 2001. Dr. Rice insisted that it was all a matter of principle that no National Security Advisor had testified before anything like the September 11 Commission. When it was revealed that similar public testimony under oath had been offered after the Pearl Harbor attacks, the Bush Administration announced that Dr. Rice would testify after all. Apparently, the principle of the thing was just a legalistic technicality. One of Richard Clarke's most alarming accusations against the Bush Administration was that he had offered a plan to prevent attacks by Osama bin Laden's Al-Qaeda terrorist organization, but that Condoleeza Rice and George W. Bush had done nothing about the plan. When she finally testified, Dr. Rice claimed that Richard Clarke's plan was actually not a plan, but a collection of "actionable items". What the difference is between a collection of "actionable items" and a plan is, Dr. Rice would not explain. Far from the honor and decency that Bush and Cheney promised to return to the White House, we have received what Richard Nixon's counsel John Dean calls "Worse Than Watergate". Secrecy and deception, combined with new programs for spying on ordinary Americans, have made the problems of big government even worse. We cannot bring ourselves to subject America to another four years of such unprincipled dishonesty, even if it is covered up with a furious campaign of legal technicalities. If we say that we believe in the Ten Commandments from God, and then do not insist that our own President follows those Commandments, how can we call ourselves Christian? Mr. Bush has borne false witness to us, and must lose the support of those who speak for Christian morals. It would be a fine irony indeed if Bush lost the election over a tide of righteous indignation from his former supporters. Electing Roy Moore to the office of president would, in many respects, fling us out of the frying pan into the fire. But at least the man would probably look you in the eye and speak what he believed was the truth. Roy Moore most certainly does not fall in the ABB category. Still, I'd rather have open opposition from someone whose beliefs differ from mine, than the sneaky, deceptive, posing, two-faced, opportunistic, sly, smirking, fraudulent, sorry excuse for a leader we have now. posted by Liz @ 12:58 AM | The template is set to display 10 posts. I welcome politely worded comments and email, my spam filter throws the rest away, so don't bother to flame me WHY 'LIFE AS A SPECTATOR SPORT' "If you're lucky not to live in the gutters of a slum, but still can't afford to take vacations in the Alps, you're part of that enormous middle class who lives life through the medium of the television, further separated from "real" life by air conditioner, by automobile, by dishwasher, microwave and ice-in-the-door refrigerator, by automatic washer and dryer, and all the other appliances and conveniences that make it possible for America to live life at second hand. I'm not sure why Americans decided that televised drama was better than the real thing, that cardboard microwave food containers were an adequate substitute for real dishes, and their contents for real food, or that cooking, dishwashing and face-to-face conversation wasn't worth the effort and time it required. Someone fed this nation a plastic crate of out-of-season tomatoes and told us it was life and we took them at their word, and we're so much the poorer for it that it's hard to know where to start to list the shortcomings." I wrote this a couple of years ago, but I have to admit it's much less amusing than I thought it would be to see the artifical construct falling apart.
